Store Sales Y/Y change1.6 %1.4 %

Like ICSC-Goldman, Redbook reports slowing in the Jan. 9 week, at a year-on-year same-store sales pace of plus 1.4 percent. Redbook said a lack of bargains, due to better inventory control, hurt the week's sales. The two reports are now moving in line with four-week averages both at 1.7 percent. Up until December, Redbook had been trending lower than ICSC-Goldman. Month-to-month, Redbook pegs the sales pace at minus 1.0 percent vs. its own target of minus 1.2 percent. The Commerce Department will release the December retail sales report on Thursday.

A weekly measure of comparable store sales at chain stores, discounters, and department stores. Redbook tracks week-to-week change, month-to-date change, and year-on-year change with the latter the most closely watched reading. The report offers early indications on ex-auto ex-gas retail sales.  Why Investors Care
